What’s in a month?

What can I get done in a month?

It’s going to roll around anyway, what can I do between now and then?

Can I finish Mossy Tendrils? Skew? Another Bagstopper? Can I finish the mitts to go with Silver Sands? What about the little Square Cake bag I had hoped for? Probably not. Not all of them, anyway.

What about finishing The Waves, Frankenstein, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Sexual Personae, Catcher in the Rye, The Blind Assassin, Tempests After Shakespeare and One, Two, Buckle My Shoe? Those are just the books in my immediate vicinity: I assure you there’s a few more either on the go or revving their engines.  Probably not.

Will I send all the emails I think of sending and compose while falling asleep? Will I write all the poetry whose opening rhymes I have hastily scrawled on the backs of envelopes, on whatever I can find while waiting at red lights, or on notepads during meetings, pretending I’m taking notes?  Probably not.

I will, assuming current trends are maintained, sleep approximately 232 hours, eat 87 meals and around 30 to 40 snacks, do between 145 and 290 hours of yoga and drink around 124 cups of tea.  My hair will grow about half an inch and my nails about 3mm.

All of this is pure speculation, of course: I could have a euphoric burst of energy and succeed in an hour of yoga every single day for the next 29 days; I could suddenly find tea deeply distasteful and swear off it forever; I could shave my head every day in some sort of ritual (this wouldn’t change the fact that my hair will grow about half an inch, but it will disguise it somewhat); I could suddenly become narcoleptic, or alternatively, insomniac.

But I do know that in a month, we will settle on and move into the house we have just exchanged contracts on. I’d prefer to move house with a few of these projects sealed up and finished, so I should start cracking the whip. It will be interesting to see what happens between now and then.
