Probably the tooth fairy

I couldn’t say for certain where these babies came from.  I’m not sure how it happened.  One second I was trawling patterns, wishing that I had a set of DPNs between 3.25mm and 4.5mm (theoretically, I’ve got a set of 4mm somewhere, but I’m not sure what they’re doing at the moment), and the next second: blammo! Mitts!

These are to go with the beret I mentioned recently.  The lace doesn’t match, but I really didn’t feel like making a lacey mitt pattern to match the beret — plus, the openness of the lace on the beret creates a nice drapey effect that I didn’t think would really work that will in mitts.  So I found another, slightly lacey mitt pattern: the Garden Trellis Mitts, which you can download through Ravelry.

It’s a gorgeous pattern!  It pleases my symmetry-loving little heart that the thumb emerges through a series of invisible, symmetrical increases, and the way the lace emerges from the twisted rib down the bottom…well, just look at how great it looks:

I cast on the first mitt at work on Friday morning, and hey presto, I’ve just finished weaving in the ends on the second one (Sunday). That’s pretty damn quick.  They’ve just about knit themselves, which would at least explain the way the DPNs get tangled up in my keys when they appear to be sitting quietly in my handbag.

I really love these, and I have a sneaky suspicion that there will be more of them in the future.
